History Group

Netheravon is steeped in history both military and civilian. We have one of the oldest airfields in the country, some say the world, which is still in use with the Army Parachute Association and also Headquarters Brigade of Gurkhas (HQBG) which is responsible for providing advice on all matters relating to the recruiting and employment of Gurkhas in the British Army. There is also Netheravon House which was built in 1720 as a hunting lodge for the Duke of Beaufort, it was bought in 1898 by the crown commissioners. In 1904 it became the cavalry school officers mess, during it's life time it has also been a 1st world war hospital and convalesant home for Canadian soldiers, a machine gun school in 1921 and it's last army position was for the army chaplains department.

Mill Road, Netheravon

At the rear of the house we have a uniquely square Dovecote built in 1750 and now owned by the National Trust. There is also All Saints Church dating back to Saxon times, the church records go back as far as 1131.

Quite a few people who are tracing their family roots and trying to complete their family tree, have come to us for help and we have had quite a lot of success in assisting them. If you are interested in the village history and would like to see or purchase any of the photos from the archives please email below.

About Haxton

Haxton, like Fittleton is situated on the east bank of the River Avon and just across the river from the village of Netheravon. Haxton was first recorded as 'Hakeneston' in 1172. In previous ordination’s the name is given as Hakeneston, Habeleston, and Haxton.

For most of its history Haxton appears to have been more populous and wealthy than Fittleton; the 1332 tax list, for instance, enters a total for Haxton more than four times that for Fittleton.

As late as 1817 the first Ordnance Survey map omits the name Fittleton altogether, and describes the whole settlement as Haxton. The parish church, however, lay just on the Fittleton side of the tithing boundary, and its name has prevailed for the civil parish too.

In 1847 an iron suspension bridge was provided to reach Netheravon from Haxton an innovative suspension structure built by Bath engineer James Dredge,, and around 1907 a brick pier and steel beam bridge was built. The bridge from Haxton to Netheravon, known to locals as “The Red Bridge” has now been replaced by a new bridge using some of the old materials to bring it in keeping with the area, but to also make it safe for modern traffic conditions.

The village green at Haxton is known as The Pound.

Fittleton is a typical chalkland ‘strip’ parish, extending some 7km eastward from the River Avon up on to the wild downland, which since its acquisition by the War Office in 1898 has been devoted to military training and aviation. The parish is divided lengthwise into two tithings, Fittleton and Haxton, and their settlements have coalesced in the valley. Neither is well known or much frequented, because the main road (the A345) runs up the western side of the valley, affording only a glimpse of Fittleton’s steepled church beyond the meadows and fish lakes. Until 1840, when the present road was turnpiked.....

This parish history by John Chandler is taken from his books ‘Marlborough and Eastern Wiltshire’ (Hobnob Press, 2001, £20.00, ISBN 0 946418 07 1) and ‘Devizes and Central Wiltshire’ (Hobnob Press, 2003, £20.00, ISBN 0 946418 16 0). The books are the first two of a projected series of seven, under the series title 'Wiltshire: a History of its Landscape and People', which together will offer short histories of every parish in Wiltshire.
